Paula Abdul Continues The Weirdness
Posted by Rhys Alexander Categories: FOX, American Idol, Talent, Gossip, Rumors,
Every week, when viewers tune in to American Idol, one question is the most prevalent: “Is Paula Abdul on drugs?” Along with Abdul’s infamous affair(s?) with contestants, incoherent ramblings, ill-timed giggling fits, and federal crimes committed in airports, a rash of new rumors are circulating regarding her alleged near-firing from the show.
Sources recently told US Weekly that the producers of American Idol have reached the limits of their patience with the former pop star, and are considering replacing her with Jessica Simpson or Britney Spears. Other sources, of course, deny it. But one thing can’t be denied - Paula does seem pretty weird. Here’s an example of a recent Abdul-ism: “Simon said…he always refers to a fortune cookie and says the moth who finds the melon finds the cornflake always finds the melon and one of you didn’t pick the right fortune.”
Hmm. What do you think? Paula Abdul: Crazy, under the influence, or adorably eccentric?

American Idol 5: Chris Daughtry Masters the Covers
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial, News,
Two weeks ago, I told everyone how extremely upset I was at the judges for not realizing that Chris Daughtry had ripped off the Red Hot Chili Peppers with his rendition of ‘Higher Ground’. And no—it was not because I thought the performance was necessarily bad. It was because the judges gave him props for making the song ‘his own’.
Last week I said I was hesitant about giving Chris a compliment because I wasn’t entirely sure if he had ripped off someone else again. Not surprisingly, the judges ate his original version of ‘I Walk the Line’. They praised him for separating himself from the rest of the group.
Fast forward to this week—when I found out I was right!!! Chris is a big phoney. Do I think he’s a bad singer? No. Do I think he should be headlining a local cover band at your neighborhood bar? Yes. Apparently the Idol chatrooms have been all buzzing since his appearance last week. Seems the judges gave him props way too soon. According to those familiar with the works done by the band Live, Daughtry’s rendition was just another rip-off of something they did back in 2001. As one message read: “This guy is rip off. Judges are plain dumb.”
On American Idol last night, they confronted the controversy by having Ryan Seacrest simply ask Chris if his rendition of “Walk The Line” was Live’s version, which resulted in Chris and Ryan talking about how Live is one of Chris’ favorite bands.

American Idol 5: Kevin Covais Voted Off
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol,
Well, well, well. Who knew that if you wished upon a star hard enough, your dreams could come true? I prayed for the day that Kevin Covais would finally be kicked off American Idol, but I never thought it would happen so soon. When I heard that Votefortheworst.com was backing him just for sheer entertainment, I was convinced that I would have to listen to him for weeks to come. So ultimately, I had to pick Lisa Tucker as the loser for the week. But that’s okay. I may have lost—but I really won! Kevin’s elimination was equivalent to Brent’s firing on The Apprentice. With less dead weight on the show now, we’re just about ready to get down to business. Once that airhead Kellie Pickler is eliminated, it’ll be clear sailing from here…

American Idol 5: Final 12 - Week 2

Tonight the contestants had to become familiar with tunes from way before they were born. Songs from the 50’s. Luckily, they were helped through their journey by a great vocal coach—the one and only Barry Manilow. Bobby Bennett’s grandmother must be kicking herself right now. Was he able to get a show-stopping performance out of them? Check out our thoughts, after the jump.

American Idol 5: Simon’s Predicts the Winners
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Reality, American Idol,
Judge Simon Cowell made some interesting comments this week on Howard Stern’s radio program. Never shy about announcing his favorites, Simon made his predictions for the Top Three: Chris Daughtry, Taylor Hicks…and Kellie Pickler?? If Kellie’s keeps performing as well as she did last week, she shouldn’t make it past Week 3. But if the Web site Votefortheworst.com has it’s way, Pickler will be in the Final Two…right up there with Kevin Covais. Determined to keep the worst singer on the show to make the competition more interesting, the site is currently throwing its weight behind the red-head. Should he get knocked off any time soon, their next target will be Pickler. Gre-aat.

American Idol 5: Final 12 - Week 1
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Features,
The American Idol contestants got to start off the first week of finals on a very high note. A Stevie Wonder night? How much bigger could it get? Unfortunately, singing the songs of such a legend can only bring high expectations along with it. Were the contestants up to the challenge? And more importantly—who would sing “You Are the Sunshine of My Life”? (My early prediction was Kevin Covais). Let’s see if I was right…

American Idol 5: The Final 12 Decided
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol,
So the Final 12 have finally been decided—and many may be shocked by those who fell by the wasteside. TV Envy did predict the loss of Kinnick Sky and Will Makar, but we can’t say that we’re surprised about the loss of Ayla Brown and Gedeon McKinney.
Ayla’s rendition of ‘Unwritten’ was definitely questionable, but we thought that her likeable personality and basketball alter-ego would make her a fan favorite. Based on last night’s performance alone, though, the viewers made the correct choice. Despite some questionable notes, Melissa McGhee’s performance did surpass Ayla’s.
As for Gedeon McKinney—one can only guess that his ‘record of the world’ made a lasting impression in more ways than one. By voting him off now, the viewers are spared 12 more weeks of his impressionist paintings. TV Envy still thinks that Gedeon’s singing was better than Kevin Covais’, but overall it’s easier to tolerate a cute 16-year-old than a young man in an old body.

American Idol 5: Week 3 - The Men

Once again, the male contestants put out a better overall showing than the ladies—but only six will make it through on Thursday. How did they individually fare? Find out after the jump. As an aside, we are glad that Paula decided to lighten up on the cleavage this evening, opting instead for a gigantic flower of some sort. Good stuff.
